Description of functionality / features (client and server)

The project aims to build a free Certificate Authority while at the same time providing a sufficiently high level of trust.

The basic idea is to let "assurers" check the identity of applicants (by face-to-face meeting and check of government-issued ID cards). The assurer can give the certificate a number of "assurance points". The maximum number she can assign is bounded by her status as assurer. Certificate holders with sufficiently many points on their certificates can apply to become assurers themselves. The project claims to have over 2000 assurers world-wide.
